WhatsApp rolls out the ability to link email addresses to accounts: How it works

WhatsApp is rolling out an update that will allow iOS users to link their email address to their WhatsApp account. Currently, the messaging app allows users to log into their accounts using their registered phone number. Adding your email address gives you additional access to WhatsApp. Your email address will not appear in your contacts. Adding an email address is useful if you are unable to receive an SMS code to log in to WhatsApp.

As part of the update to WhatsApp for iOS (via WABetaInfo), the messaging service started prompting users to add their email address to their WhatsApp account. The in-app message says, “Your email gives you access to your account. It’s not visible to anyone else.” After entering your email address, you will need to enter the verification code that will be sent to you for verification.

To add an email address to your account, you’ll need to make sure your iPhone is running the latest version of WhatsApp from the App Store. After installing the WhatsApp for iOS update, go to the settings menu and tap account > email address To add your email address. The feature was discovered in the beta version of his Android and iOS apps earlier this month.

Once you link your email address to your account, you will receive a verification code via your email address. This is useful if you are unable to receive SMS codes due to network issues or other technical issues. However, WhatsApp will continue to use your phone number as your primary identifier on the app, and your email address will remain a private way for the service to send you verification codes.

There’s no word on when the same feature will roll out to all Android users on the stable channel. Gadgets 360 is currently available to beta testers on Android, and we were able to confirm that the email address link works as advertised. Users can expect the Meta-owned messaging service to roll out email address linking functionality to users on Android in the coming days.
