In June, Apple announced iOS 17 with a wide range of new features and changes for iPhone. After more than three months of beta testing, the free software update is scheduled to be released this Monday, September 18th, for iPhone XS and later.
Below, we’ve summarized the 10 major features iOS 17 is adding to your iPhone. Additional features will be available later this year. This update is expected to be released to users on Monday at approximately 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET. Once released, you can install it from the Settings app > General > Software Update.
stand by
According to Apple, StandBy is a new full-screen display that provides at-a-glance information designed to be visible from a distance when your iPhone is charging horizontally. Customizable interface lets you display different styles of clocks, calendars, favorite photos, weather forecasts, music playback controls, widgets, and more.
StandBy is designed to charge your iPhone on your nightstand, kitchen counter, or desk, and supports Live Activity, Siri, incoming calls, and loud notifications. This feature also works with the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display.
contact poster
With iOS 17, users can create personalized contact posters that appear on other people’s iPhones during incoming calls. Posters can include photos and Memoji, and you can also customize the font and background color. This feature is available in the built-in phone app and will also be available in third-party calling apps.
name drop
NameDrop makes it easy to share contact information by holding your iPhone close. Both individuals can select specific phone numbers or email addresses they want to share, and can also share their contact poster.
live voicemail
Live voicemail provides a real-time transcription on your screen when someone leaves a voicemail. If the user thinks voicemail is important, they can answer the call while the caller leaves a message. Apple says calls identified as spam by carriers are not transcribed and are immediately rejected.
Swipe to reply in iMessage
In the Messages app, users can now swipe right on a message to send an inline reply.
interactive widget
Interactive widgets are now available on iPhone’s home screen, lock screen, and new standby view. Apple gave examples of how the interactive widget could be used to mark reminders as done, play or pause songs or podcasts, and control accessories in the Home app. As third-party apps are updated, more possibilities will open up. Support will be provided in the coming months.
Previously, Home screen widgets offered limited functionality because Apple didn’t allow developers to include scrolling, buttons, or animations.
Autocorrect improvements
Apple says iOS 17 includes state-of-the-art language models for word prediction, which significantly improves autocorrect on iPhone. As you type, on-device machine learning intelligently corrects mistakes with greater accuracy than ever before. Additionally, users will now receive predictive text recommendations inline as they type, and can tap the spacebar to add words or complete sentences.
iOS 17 has an updated design for autocorrect to easily underline autocorrected words. Tap an underlined word to see the original word you typed, making it easy to quickly undo changes. The system also learns users’ typing habits over time and avoids some modifications, which Apple’s head of software engineering Craig Federighi said helps prevent “the moment you want to type a duck word.” Said it is designed for.
Use Apple Maps offline
Apple Maps has caught up with key Google Maps features in iOS 17 with the ability to download maps for offline use. Apple says users can download specific map areas to access turn-by-turn navigation or view estimated time of arrival, even when their iPhone isn’t connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. You can also search for locations.
sticker drawer
The new sticker drawer in iOS 17 gives you access to all your stickers in one place, including Live Stickers, emojis, Memoji, and iMessage sticker packs. Live stamps can be created by touching and holding an object such as a cat or dog in a photo.
“Hey Siri” is shortened to Siri
Apple has simplified voice commands for invoking Siri on the iPhone and other Apple devices, including the iPad, Mac, HomePod, and the latest AirPods Pro. Instead of “Hey Siri,” users can now simply say “Siri” to launch the voice assistant, and can now issue multiple commands in succession without having to say “Siri” again.
