(NEXSTAR) – Apple rolled out its latest software update on Monday, bringing a slew of new features for Apple fans, including changes to voicemail, FaceTime and more. But for some iPhone users, installing that update may not be a walk in the park.
With all the fuss about FaceTime messaging, live voicemail transcription, and StandBy mode, there are a few reasons not to upgrade immediately.
One of the first is simple: storage. If you are low on device storage, keep in mind that the download will take several gigabytes.
After releasing a major software update, Apple also pushes subsequent updates (iOS 15.0.1, iOS 15.0.2, etc.), which often include bug or security fixes. For this reason, some may choose not to immediately update to iOS 17 on the day it is released.
According to CNET, the update may also cause your battery to drain faster than normal, possibly because your device is busy indexing your files in the background so iOS 17’s fancy new features can work properly. The technology website notes that it is not unusual for the battery to suffer for the first few days while the iPhone processes the update.
Another reason could be that some developers behind apps on your phone haven’t released iOS 17-ready updates, causing those apps to consume your battery life.
For iPhone owners with an older model phone, it’s also worth keeping in mind that some features won’t be available with the update. Have you been looking forward to forwarding FaceTime calls to your television using Apple TV? For this you need at least an iPhone XS, iPhone XR or newer.
Other features advertised on Apple’s website, such as the Journal app, are not actually available now, but will be part of a future update.
And if your phone is too old, the iOS 17 update isn’t even an option because those devices are no longer supported.
While some may have reasons to delay or even decline the iOS 17 update, it’s probably a good idea for most. In addition to a long list of features, including AirDrop for contacts, live voicemail transcribing, StandBy mode that turns your phone into a smart nightstand, and a new way to interact with Siri, iOS 17 also offers the most up-to-date security measures. .
