Apple on Monday released the new iOS 17 operating system, which includes new security and safety features.

The new operating system was announced earlier this summer.

Apple’s security came under intense scrutiny earlier this month after the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab discovered security flaws. Apple has urged some iPhone and iPad users to update their devices immediately.

The new operating system supports lockdown mode on more devices and has increased security to protect against advanced cyber-attacks. This feature will also be available to Apple Watch users. The new Lockdown mode blocks your iPhone from automatically joining unsecured Wi-Fi networks. It also automatically removes geolocation data from your photos when you share them with others.

Here are some other new security updates.

Safari now supports multiple profiles, allowing you to separate browsers by topic, such as work and personal. This separates history, jobs, cookies, and other data.

iOS 17 also makes private tabs even more private by locking your private browsing window when you’re not using it and blocking trackers from loading the page. The Safari browser removes tracking information from web addresses that can be used to identify you and your device.

New communications safety features include protection for sensitive videos and photos. This goes beyond the Messages app and includes content from AirDrop, FaceTime, and third-party apps.

We’ve also added two new features: Check-in and Live Transcription. Check In allows iPhone users to share their location with friends so they can monitor your real-time location and see when it’s safe to arrive. Also, alert your friends if you think something is wrong. Apple said the feature is end-to-end encrypted.

Live transcription allows users to send calls to voicemail and see a live transcription of messages, helping users determine fraudulent calls.

This software update also includes updates to communication apps, including easier sharing with AirDrop, video messaging with FaceTime, and new experiences with Journal and StandBy.

The new iOS is available on 2nd generation iPhone SE and later, iPhone XR and later. You can check if your phone is available in the Settings app.
