iOS 17 and watchOS 10 introduce new ways to easily exchange contact information between your iPhone, Apple Watch, or both. NameDrop, a new feature available to everyone this fall, gives you control over what information you share via AirDrop without having to create a separate contact card.
But NameDrop isn’t the only update to the contact card experience in iOS 17.
iOS 17 brings a widely requested feature to the Contacts app in the form of a new pronoun field.
We often include pronoun preferences in our email signatures and social media, but to save this information in the Contacts app, we had to manually create a field in the Notes section. Added preset fields that allow you to save pronoun settings.
The pronoun field isn’t just useful for other people’s contact cards. You can also add your own pronoun preferences to your personal contact cards. If you do this, your pronoun preferences will be shared along with your other contact information when you exchange cards with someone.
This is more than just a basic text field. Apple has many languages to choose from, and the app includes instructions on how to use the three forms of pronouns grammatically and accurately.
Importantly, Apple includes a helpful privacy policy regarding pronoun entries.
“Pronouns are only used on devices by supported Apple apps,” the company said. “These are not shared with Apple or third-party developers.”
New pronoun fields can be found in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and watchOS 10. macOS Sonoma is scheduled to be released later this month.
