AutoCAD is notable as the first widely used commercial application for the desktop personal computer. As of August 2018, AutoCAD (2014) is used by more than two million people. AutoCAD may be purchased by individuals, companies and design-related organizations at the time of this writing. Autodesk has also introduced a series of command line tools for professional engineers.

A newcomer may be easily overwhelmed by the number of features available and the many ways of using them. This article is intended to give the novice or untrained user a brief introduction to Autodesk AutoCAD. It is also designed to help the novice user determine if AutoCAD is right for him or her.

AutoCAD is also known as AutoCAD LT, LT, Architectural Desktop, Architectural Desktop LT, Architectural Desktop LT for Windows, and AutoCAD Architecture. In this article, I will refer to AutoCAD as “AutoCAD”, and “AutoCAD LT” as “AutoCAD LT”. AutoCAD LT is free. AutoCAD is sold by Autodesk at prices ranging from US$500 to US$800, depending on the version.

Who Uses AutoCAD?

There are a few things about AutoCAD that, firstly, make it unique among CAD programs. You use it to create 2D drawings for use by architects and engineers, but also 2D animations, 3D models and interactive user interfaces.

What’s interesting, however, is that Autodesk is not primarily an architectural or engineering firm, so why would people use AutoCAD? Several reasons exist.

First, AutoCAD is easy to learn. Many of the features offered are useful even to non-architects. For example, the ability to select objects and move them, draw geometric shapes, and define fills, linetypes, and colors, is relatively straightforward for even the least-experienced user.

Second, AutoCAD is great for creating 2D drawings and animations. Often, when architects and engineers are building the 3D models and animations, they are just finishing up the drawings or animations. For example, you may already have a 3D visualization of your building in SketchUp, so you can just “draw” the building into 2D. The end result can be so much better than a 2D CAD package.

As a modeling application AutoCAD Architecture is used for the design and documentation of buildings and their components.

Traditionally, AutoCAD Architecture was oriented towards non-residential building design, often using scaled drawings. These were easier to construct, and could be drawn in smaller sizes, than plans and sections, yet easily printed and reproduced. The geometry in these designs was more focused, using fewer nodes and simpler relationships, and was centered on a common standard reference point called a “node base.”

With the introduction of the “Relative Geometry” feature, AutoCAD Architecture is now oriented toward residential building design, using scaled plans and sections that are displayed on their own sheet, rather than drawn into a “base.” AutoCAD Architecture’s utility is the ability to automatically insert geometry from existing plans. As a result, architectural design is no longer strictly oriented toward the construction and documentation of plans and sections; as a non-planning application, AutoCAD Architecture is quite flexible and powerful. Unlike traditional architectural design, architectural design using AutoCAD Architecture is not limited to only two dimensions. It is possible to define spatial relationships and produce 3D drawings.

Today, much of architectural work is done using AutoCAD Architecture and other applications. A building plan may be drawn in AutoCAD Architecture, then visualized in a 3D modeling application such as 3D Studio MAX. When a model is complete, it may be exported to stereolithography format, then used to produce a 3D model that can be used to create plastic replicas.


AutoCAD Civil 3D is used to design, simulate, and analyze civil infrastructure such as roads, bridges, dams, tunnels, sewers, tunnels, pipelines, buildings, parking lots, and excavations. It also can perform finite element analysis to solve engineering problems such as the stability of bridges and the stability of buildings.


AutoCAD Mechanical is used for engineering applications such as architectural, automotive, and aerospace design. It can create most standard mechanical parts, and can analyze mechanical design.


AutoCAD Architecture is used to design spaces for residential and commercial projects. For both interior and exterior design, this application is used to create spaces such as galleries, classrooms, offices, conference rooms, stairwells, industrial workplaces, and lobbies. How to get a list of files from a specific pattern of a directory in c++

I want to get a list of all the files in a directory where the filenames match a specific pattern. The pattern could be anything for example:



*.cpp *.h

*.h *.cpp



It can also be any combination of those patterns.
I need to ignore the cpp, h, etc, extensions, but only the files which have those extensions. The number of wildcards can vary from 0 to 10, but a pattern of 2 wildcards is not allowed.
What is the best way to do it? Is it possible to do this in c++?


You can use the following regular expression to do this.

The first part of the regular expression looks for any character except a * with the exception of a * itself which matches one character of * followed by any character (matching the asterisk). The + is meant to ensure that the preceding sequence is non-empty.
The second part of the regular expression looks for any non-* character followed by a *.
