* Adobe Photoshop CS4, which is the latest version, has some of the most helpful tutorials available for free, many of which are from Adobe itself.

We use Photoshop CS4 in this chapter to show you how to create a portrait of an older person, which can be used for a number of purposes, including as the background of an e-mail signature.

Here are some things to remember when using Photoshop:

• Place your photo under the Background layer so that the completed file is a layered file.

• Use the drawing tools to create the subject you want to add to your picture.

• Make sure that the drawing tool options are set to simple.

The Best Photoshop Tutorials

Adobe Photoshop is generally considered to be one of the best image editing programs available. It has many tutorials available for it online and in print books. Web sites like offer free Photoshop tutorials.

For online help, Adobe provides the following website: ``

Photoshop has a substantial user community of very knowledgeable people willing to share and give advice. There are two Photoshop Web sites with a large number of helpful people who offer tutorials, especially for beginners:

If you’re looking for more of a long-term resource, the following site offers a full-color A4/5-inch-thick book (in Japanese) of Photoshop tutorials: ``

Adobe’s Photoshop-making site is at ``.

1. Create a new, blank file and name it.jpg.

A new blank, empty image file is the best way to start a Photoshop project.

2. Now you will create an image of your subject using the drawing tools and the background.

3. Create a new layer and drop it on top of the Background layer.

4. Name the new layer a drawing, as shown in Figure 3-1.

**Figure 3-1:** Create a new layer and drop it on top of the Background layer.

Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Sketch are Adobe’s tools for designing images, logos, websites, books, and advertisements. The other apps in the Creative Cloud range are Dreamweaver, Muse and After Effects.

Before you start using Photoshop to edit an image, it’s important to learn how to use the program. This guide will help you use Photoshop more efficiently in no time.

Enable and work with layers

Save, copy and import images

How to use Layers in Photoshop

Before you open a new image, you must add a layer for it. You can do this by clicking the New Layer button in the layers panel.

You can also use the Layers panel, located at the bottom of the workspace.

Select a layer or image

Click the New Layer button in the bottom-left corner of the panel

Select an image or a smart object by clicking it

Add a new layer

You can change the opacity and blending modes of a layer.

Using a layer allows you to control all aspects of a single image, including color, shape, size, blending mode, and fill.

Add a new layer

Select one or more objects or images

Adjust the color, brightness and contrast

Make the image look sharper

Use Photoshop’s Curves adjustment tool to change the brightness and contrast. This tool is found in the Adjustments panel.

Sometimes color images look too bright or too dark. To make them look sharper, you can use the Curves adjustment tool.

As you drag the black handle to the right or the white handle to the left, the image changes until you reach the desired brightness and contrast.

Use the Hue-Saturation adjustment tool to adjust the color of the image.

Use the Brightness/Contrast adjustment tool to change the color of the image. In this example, the image looks too bright.

You can change the brightness and contrast using the Brightness/Contrast adjustment tool.

We’re going to use the Levels adjustment tool to adjust the brightness of the image, not the contrast.

Click the Shadows or Highlights tool in the Adjustments panel

Drag one of the white handles to the left or drag one

Can someone explain this for my understanding?

While reading up on PDE’s and mappping for medical imaging, I came across a example that I don’t understand.

Let $u = f_{xx}$ where $f(x,y) = \sqrt{x^2+y^2}$.
Then, $u$ satisfies:
u_t-u_x-u_y & = & 0 \\
u & = & 0 \; \; \text{ on } \; \; y = 0 \; \; \text{and } \; \; x = 0\\
This problem is solved by setting $u(x,y,t) = \psi(x-ct,y,t)$ and $\psi$ is the solution to the heat equation. The fundamental theorem of calculus then gives:
$$\frac{\partial \psi}{\partial t}(x,y,t) = -c\frac{\partial \psi}{\partial x}(x,y,t) -c\frac{\partial \psi}{\partial y}(x,y,t) = 0$$
and if we let $\phi(x,y,t) = \psi(x,y,t)$ then $\phi$ solves:
\phi_t-\phi_x-\phi_y & = & 0 \\
\phi & = & 0 \; \; \text{ on } \; \; y = 0 \; \; \text{and } \; \; x = 0\\

I know, I know, it’s a bad example, but I’m wondering about one thing specifically. How are we using the first equation to derive the second?
I know you can transform a PDE by defining new variables ($u(x,y,t) = \psi(x,y,t)$), but, how does this work in this example?

Let me try to give you a little hint that may help you understand

Interfacing human macrophages and human mesenchymal stem cells to evaluate biocompatibility of an injectable bone substitute for orthopedic applications.
An injectable calcium phosphate-based material (CAM) composed of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-tricalcium phosphate (βTCP) granules (40-60 μm in diameter) was designed to be injected as a bone substitute in orthopedic applications. The goal of this study was to quantify the effects of CAM on human bone marrow-derived monocyte/macrophages and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) using an in vitro model of inflammatory responses. CAM particles were implanted into subcutaneous spaces in mice. No evidence of inflammatory cell infiltration and cytokine release was observed in the implant space. CAM was therefore determined to be bio-compatible and biocompatible to the host. A sample of CAM (0.2 g) was implanted into the calvaria of SCID mice for up to 8 weeks. No inflammatory cell infiltration was observed at the implantation site. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells were stimulated with CAM for the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. CAM induced the release of CXCL10 (1.4 μg/ml) and IL-6 (0.5 μg/ml) compared to medium only controls (0.1 μg/ml) while upregulating the expression of ICAM-1 in hBMSCs. These observations suggest that the calcified block material CAM is a non-inflammatory injectable material for orthopedic applications.Q:

Bluetooth and mouse issues

Bluetooth came pre-installed with my computer and works fine out-of-the-box, but when connected, I have a number of issues.

My mouse has a big lag. It is probably slow due to the fact that I have it set to Auto.
I cannot connect a keyboard, it just doesn’t show in the list on the far right of my screen

Any ideas?

Disabling the mouse/keyboard accelerators should help with the Bluetooth lag. This is done in the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Mouse and Keyboard\Mouse and keyboard accelerators.
As for the second problem, you can try the button combinations above which are supposed to work with both keyboard and mouse.
Your keyboard may be set to hide at boot
